Chapter 2 - Frameworks

We then searched framework that we could use to guide us along the correct path.

We have used the Core Education MLE Planning Matrix. The dimensions and framing questions have given us the direction we need to forge ahead.

Our next step was to create an 2014 Action Plan (using the MLE Planning Matrix as our guideline) to make this monumental journey manageable (we think!!!!!).

Chapter 3 - Professional Reading

Am currently reading "A Rich Seam - How New Pedagogies Find Deep Learning". by Michael Fullen & Maria Langworthy. FANTASTIC!!!

It has highlighted and reinforced for me:

  •  the changing focus away from just building working "relationships" with all key stakeholders in a school towards deepening "learning partnerships".
  • the importance of a clear "learning process" that moves away from the notion of collecting and remembering knowledge to students and teachers practicing the learning process, creating and using new knowledge in authentic contexts, promoting key future skills and rewarding proactive dispositions.
  • the changing role of the teacher and the support needed to make this change
  • the crucial element of technologies and eLearning throughout all aspect of a learning process
Key words & Food for thought:
relationships
valuing student aspirations
feedback
peer tutoring
key future skills - The 6C's
learning goals
content discovery
collaborative, connected learning
learner autonomy

WOW and now The BURNING Question!

How is South Hornby School placed to cater for new pedagogies to enhance new learning?.............we are about to find out!

Chapter 4 - Staff PD

Had an amazing two days with the fantastic South Hornby Staff.

Presentations:

Our Key thoughts at the end of two full on days:

•  change starts with US.

“Children won’t wait. Teachers can’t wait”

• model excitement and passion – High Expectations and High Self Esteem

• learning relationships are key

• let’s listen to our children more – Power to the KIDS!!!!

• know and help them find their passionslearn and grow together

• the power of co-constructed success criteria (rubrics) ongoing feedback and prototyping

be an “Activator” of learning NOT a director OR a facilitator

• start to develop a mindset based upon the learning process:

                        •Build LearningBuild UnderstandingsApply Understandings

Embrace and use eLearning

• Googleable v Non GoogleableLearning

Remember we ALL need:

• support – “5 Lessons from the All Blacks”

• a time to vent frustrations and celebrate success

• to make a commitment to change

• a framework to guide us – SOLO, FullenMacIntosh Design Theory

Chapter 5 - Sandpit Time

Now it begins to get exciting as the staff and students begin to "play" with Deep Learning and eLearning.

Class Blogs - Our first attempt

SOLO - Using Compare and Contrast with New Entrants

Room 2 & 3 completed a collaborative teaching activity comparing and contrasting birds. The deep learning and communication shown by the students was amazing!!! Well done Sarah, Paula and Kirsten!!!!

Collaborative Writing

Our Senior Syndicate is beginning to experiment with collborative writing tasks using Googledocs. Very exciting!!!!

Chapter 6 - Linking with the Community

Last Wednesday, South Hornby School held its first Parent Consultation Sessions around Modern Learning Environments and eLearning.

These sessions titled "Surfing in a Tsunami" highlighted the following areas -

1. What might the future look like for our children?
2. An introduction to Modern Learning Environments.
3. Future focussed teaching and learning.
4. An introduction to a "Bring Your Own Device" programme for our students.
5. The importance of eLearning and Cybersafety.

It was fantastic to see that over 80 school families attended these sessions.

A community blog has been created to ensure that key information is posted so you can keep up to date with the exciting journey that South Hornby School will be going through over the next few years.

The blog (http://southhornbycommunity.blogspot.co.nz/) will also be a great place for us to continue to collect our communities thoughts and ideas as we all learn to "Surf in a Tsunami"!
